He terrified you with a look; he convinced you that he could end your life as you knew it. When he walked in the room, all eyes were lowered; no one wanted to be on his bad side. Each and every one of us said a silent prayer, don’t let him see me! If I could just make it out of here today and not have to deal with him!. All of this and we were only in the second grade! We would cry to our parents that we were afraid of him and did not want to even go back to school because he was there. Did he ever hurt us? Not actually, it was just the fear he put into us. Who was he? He was the school bully.
Let’s say the same thing in today’s day.
He terrifies you with a look; he convinces you that he could end your life as you know it. When he walks in the room, all eyes are lowered; no one wants to be on his bad side. Each and every one of us says a silent prayer, don’t let him see me! If I could just make it out of here today and not have to deal with him! We would cry to our friends that we are afraid of him and did not want to even go back to work because he was there. Does he ever hurt us? Not actually, it is just the fear he put into us. Who was he: Was he the landlord, the tax man, the bill collector, the guy next door, the bully? No he was the devil.
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
No you say, it was this or that person! The bible makes it clear, that people are not our problem, the devil is. He used people to execute his evil deeds.
He begins by training us as children, he teaches us to fear the “bully”. We don’t even know why we fear him, but we do. It is something deep down within us that reacts to the evil deep down in others. When we respond with fear, this feeds that evil. There is an old legend among the American Indians. A grandson was sitting on the lap of his ancient grandfather. He asked: grandpa what is the secret of life? The grandfather said: there are two wolves that live inside of you and they are always fighting. The child innocently asks: which one wins” the grandfather says: the one that I feed!
Do we feed fear? Do we give an open door to the enemy when we focus on what he might do?
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
How many times do we focus on something that “might happen”, now it has not happened, but it might? Where do these thoughts come from? They are surely not from God because he tells us to:
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
So we give life to the enemy and to darkness when we focus on what he tells us might happen! But when we focus on what the word says: we have feed goodness.
Now the bully will find out if you do not respond to one type of fear, he will test you and see what will get thru your defenses.
He has sneaked into our culture, and our media, convincing people that when they are different, they are cool and trend setters, when in fact they are just playing into his hand once again.
Let’s take a look at a few cultural changes that have happened in which we have all bought into. The trend of torn clothes, especially jeans are the in style. Stores now sell them already worn with torn knees etc. In my generation if there was a torn knee, your mom would put a patch on it, and you would even be ashamed of that. But let’s go back further: in the days of Jesus, when people were in stress and dire straits, the would tear their clothing to show how terrible things were.
So in essence, when we wear torn clothing, are we acknowledging the depths of our distress, and are we opening a door to attacks from the enemy?
You see, some bully’s even tell others what to wear. If you want to hang with me you must wear this or that. Is the societal bully telling us to wear torn, and distressed clothing. Now when the priests were in the presence of god, they had to wear ornate, carefully designed immaculately clean clothing. torn clothing meant lack and or poverty, there is no lack in God. This trend is opposite to the affluent living that God has designed for us.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
It is also advantageous for the bully to create a realm of distrust. In this way, doubt can sneak in and confusion
1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Years ago when two men would meet on the street: they would bow low to expose their weaponry. This showed that their swords were sheathed and they meant no harm. As weaponry changed to guns and hand held knives, upon meeting men would shake hands to show that they were unarmed. Now when two young men meet, they bump clenched hands. This shows deception and possible violence. Now this evolved as a “cool” hip handshake, but when we look deeper, it is deception and fear of actually connecting with someone. Do you think this is of god. Would Jesus have been deceptive? No, he was walking in the truth.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
2 Timothy 3:13
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Now how do we stop being bullied by the world? Bullied by the powers that satan rules? How do we do it? We step out of this world into the Kingdom of God.
There are no bullies here. The world of god written in the bible is the same for you for me, for everyone. When we follow it, we will receive what He has promised.
It does not command us to pay for things we do not want like the bully does. The bully will loan us money, then charge us double, and harass us and belittle us until it is paid.
Proverbs 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
The word tells us to plant a seed and reap the harvest.
The bully takes:
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
The bully has been defeated, he knows it, but he tries to trick us into believing that he actually has power over us. The only power he has is what we give him. When we listen to lies, and act on them: he wins. This invasion of our hearts, and minds is invisible, we cannot see him if we don’t look for him and we cannot hear him if we do not listen.
We are to listen only to the voice of God. Jesus as our good shepherd tells us:
John 10:5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
How do we know if it is the Word of God or the enemy?
The thief encourages us to steal, encourages us to allow him to kill our dreams, our future and to destroy all hope.
Jesus came to give us life, which is the Word.
Think of a water glass. When it is empty it can be filled with anything you choose, good or bad. If it is already full, say full of the Word, then there is no room to add anything else without causing a mess!! Even when the glass is full of the Word and the enemy tries to pour doubt into the glass, not only will it not fit, but the few drops that get in are totally diluted by the ever present Good news which is the Word.
Sometimes we get punchy and start looking for the bully and his evil ways. We even stop what we are doing and anticipate the attack of the bully!! Have you ever had a good day when things are all flowing perfectly and asked yourself: I wonder how long this will last? You have just given that old grade school bully charge over your life once again.
It is time to begin to decree a thing and so it shall be. Decree what the Word says about you and your situation.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
Decree life and life everlasting which is what Jesus gave us. Forget that bully; he represented death and just an illusion anyway. If you had stood up to him years ago he could not frighten you now. Is your bully addiction, depression, oppression poverty or just fear? Remember, he was a liar and a coward only placing thoughts into your mind.
We are to Say yes to Jesus, yes to life and life everlasting and good by to death and good bye to that school yard bully!
